Health and Safety Committees

The University’s health and safety committees help foster a strong culture of safety with a goal of preventing workplace injuries and illnesses. The University’s health and safety committee program is overseen by Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and aligned with the safety committee requirements of Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.

Food Safety Program

The Food Safety Program ensures UW dining facilities meet the highest standards in food safety, and protects the public from foodborne illness.

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) oversees food-related activities at all UW locations, including the UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, UW Bothell and UW Tacoma through a comprehensive food safety program. This includes permanent food establishments and temporary food service events.

Fire Department Permits for Events

When hosting special events on a UW campus, a permit from your local fire department may be required. Additional permits may be required, depending on the circumstances of the event. Refer to the information below to determine the permits you need and how to apply.

For Seattle campus events, submit permit application(s) at least 30 days prior to the event to avoid extra fees in addition to the cost of the permit.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a fibrous silicate mineral that was used in many building materials due to its fire resistance, heat/cold properties, tensile strength, chemical
resistance and other properties before its use was phased out or banned. When undisturbed, asbestos does not pose a health risk.

UW Asbestos Management Plan

The Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) establishes policy and procedures to manage asbestos and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations. The compliance procedures outlined herein are intended to complement compliance responsibilities outlined in APS 12.1.
