The UW Employee Health Center in EH&S provides care based on medical management requirements of work activities.

Examples of work activities include research involving biohazards, animal research care and use, scientific diving, lead and asbestos, and work requiring respirators. 

The Employee Health Center provides clinical services that help prevent work-related illnesses, such as health screenings, ongoing medical surveillance, case management for exposure evaluations. If your position requires screening, surveillance, or preventive care from the Employee Health Center, your supervisor or HR manager will let you know.

These are some of the specific services the Employee Health Center provides:

  • Audiogram review and standard threshold shift notification
  • Respiratory medical evaluation and clearances
  • Animal research and care health screenings and clearances: animal use medical screening (AUMS).
  • Medical exams and clearances for work involving hazardous materials, select biohazards, potential for zoonotic disease
  • Scientific scuba diving medical exams and clearance
  • Hepatitis B vaccinations and records management 
  • Immunizations to comply with specific work-related requirements
  • Tuberculosis screening and surveillance
  • Project-specific surveillance and safety counseling
  • Influenza vaccination (if required to meet a job-specific requirement)
  • Post-exposure evaluations 
  • Blood pressure screening
  • Smoking cessation referrals

Outside of normal business hours, if an employee has a work-related medical injury/illness/exposure, they should seek care at the UW Medicine UW Medical Center or call UWMC Emergency Medical Services at 206.598.4000.

When contacting the Employee Health Center:

  • Call 206.685.1026 to schedule or cancel appointments.
  • Please call in advance to schedule an appointment for medical screenings or reviews.
  • To protect your privacy, email should not be used to request or share personal medical information.
  • Employee Health Center services are billed to the employee’s department. You need permission from your supervisor to access Employee Health Center services.

Your first visit

When you come to the Employee Health Center for your first visit, please arrive 15 minutes early to complete the registration process.

If you are a new employee coming to the Employee Health Center for a health screening, please bring all of your immunization records to your first appointment.


Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Injured employees can call us at 206.685.1026 immediately following an incident. We can provide first aid and a brief assessment of the injury, and then refer the employee to another healthcare facility for more complete medical attention. If an injury occurs outside EHC’s business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday), the employee should seek care at a healthcare facility in the community, such as the UW Medical Center. If it’s an emergency, the employee should call 911.

Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure

Any UW employee with a possible bloodborne pathogen exposure should contact the UW Employee Health Center at 206.685.1026 and be evaluated as soon as possible.

If the exposure occurs outside EHC’s business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday), contact the nearest hospital emergency department, which may be located at either the UW Medical Center (206.598.4000) or Harborview Medical Center (206.744.3081).

As a service to the UW community, the Employee Health Center offers free blood pressure screenings for UW staff and faculty. Please call ahead to arrange an appointment any time during office hours. For more information call 206.685.1026.

Your information is stored on a protected and secured Occupational Health Manager system (hosted by UW Medicine) for tracking and medical surveillance purposes. The Occupational Health Manager system protects the privacy of employee health records in accordance with federal and state regulations. For information regarding use and disclosure of protected health information maintained in your employee health record, you may view the Washington state codes that govern employee health information at WAC 296-802 and RCW 70.02.
