As outdoor temperatures rise and wildfire season approaches, it’s important to know how to protect yourself while working outdoors. Environmental Health & Safety offers two required online training courses to help you stay safe: Outdoor Heat Safety and Wildfire Smoke Safety.
Outdoor Heat Safety Training
This 20-minute online course teaches you how to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat-related illnesses, understand risk factors, and take steps to prevent heat stress. The training is required initially and annually for all University personnel assigned to outdoor work and for supervisors of outdoor workers.
Supervisors must also complete an Outdoor Heat Safety Plan and share it with their teams before work begins. Visit the Outdoor Heat Exposure page for more information.
Wildfire Smoke Safety
This 45-minute online course covers the health risks and symptoms of wildfire smoke exposure, how to monitor air quality, and ways to reduce your exposure. The training is required initially and annually for University personnel who work outdoors and may be exposed to wildfire smoke when the Air Quality Index (AQI) is 72 or higher. Training must be completed before working in these conditions, with annual retraining required.
Supervisors must also complete a Wildfire Smoke Response Plan and share it with their teams before work begins. Visit the Wildfire Smoke page for more information.
