Battery Fire Risk in HP and Samsung Products

Following a report of potential overheating and fire hazard of Samsung Galaxy Note7 phones by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, EH&S recommended that UW organizational unitsSafer-Lithium-ion-Batteries-300x217.jpg communicate to employees and students in their areas that these phones should not be brought to campus.

In January 2017, HP announced an expansion of its ongoing worldwide voluntary safety recall and replacement program for certain notebook computer batteries that pose a fire and burn hazard. HP urges customers to cease the use of batteries shipped with specific HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario, and HP Pavilion Notebook computers sold worldwide from March 2013 through October 2016.

EH&S recommends that UW organizational units consider taking proactive steps to restrict electronic devices in campus buildings that contain batteries with the potential to overheat and increase the risk of fire or personal injury.
