Participants will learn about the Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) policy, how DURC is reviewed and managed at UW, and the responsibilities of persons conducting research involving agents and toxins subject to the United States Government Policy on DURC.

Intended Audience 

Principal Investigators and other laboratory personnel (e.g., graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research technicians, laboratory staff, and visiting scientists) conducting research involving any of the following agents:

  • Botulinum neurotoxins (at any quantity)
  • Avian influenza virus (highly pathogenic)
  • Bacillus anthracis
  • Burkholderia mallei
  • Burkholderia pseudomallei
  • Foot-and-mouth disease virus
  • Francisella tularensis
  • Reconstructed 1918 influenza virus
  • Rinderpest virus
  • Toxin-producing strains of Clostridium botulinum
  • Yersinia pestis

Risk Group 4 Agents not permitted at UW: Ebola virus, Marburg virus, Variola major and minor viruses
