EH&S Welcomes New Assistant Director

EH&S is thrilled that Denise Bender is leading our newly created Occupational Safety & Health section and overseeing programs to reduce the risk of injury from occupational hazards in non-research work areas on the UW Seattle campus.denise.jpg

Denise is a Seattle native with over 30 years of experience in industrial hygiene, pharmaceutical manufacturing, laboratory safety and risk management.  Her expertise lies in Design for Safety to identify and mitigate risks before an accident or injury can occur.

The new EH&S Occupational Safety & Health section includes programs related to:

  • Regulated building materials (such as asbestos and lead)
  • Chemical assessments
  • Ergonomics
  • Indoor air quality (IAQ)
  • Hearing conservation
  • Electrical safety
  • Confined space entry
  • Workplace Accident Prevention and Reporting
  • Safety Training
  • Fall protection
  • And much more!

Denise earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and master’s degree in industrial hygiene at UW.  What’s her secret talent?  She served as the captain of the U.S. women’s national soccer team and fearlessly led the team to its first international competition in 1985.

Denise’s office is located on the 2nd floor of the Hall Health Center building.  She can be reached at db58@uw.edu or 206.221.0368.
