Geiger Mueller (GM) Tubes

  • GM tubes have a thin window to allow for low energy Beta penetration.

  • GM tubes work best for Beta emitters.

  • They count photons. The free electrons (Beta) and photons entering the tube interact with the gas producing electrons. These electron are attracted to the cathode and are counted.

  • GM tubes are normally operated at a voltage difference between the cathode and anode of 750 1400 volts.
