Sodium Iodide (NaI) Counters

  • NaI probes are primarily used to detect gamma radiation.

  • They can detect higher energy beta particles but are not very efficient for this use.

  • In NaI detection, a photon strikes the NaI crystal.

  • The crystal releases light as a result of the photon interaction.

  • The light is multiplied by a photomultiplier and reads out in counts per minute.

  • The metal shielding that surrounds most NaI detectors makes them inefficient for low energy Beta detection.
