Internal Radiation Exposure Protection

Internal exposure is preventable.   Safe habits can prevent this type of exposure.

    • Use "good hygiene" when working with any material.

    • Keep the material in a closed container that is marked with a radiation trefoil.  The container should be marked with the type of material, activity, and date activity was first measured.

    • Perform surveys during and after use.

      • Have a radiation instrument on when using material.

      • Monitor hands frequently.

      • Change gloves and any equipment or articles that get contaminated.

      • Contamination on lab benches and equipment can make research suspect or worthless.   Surveying reduces the chance this may happen.
