Radionuclide Decay Modes

back (1K)       next (1K)

  • Radionuclides that are unstable decay by various means:
    • Beta Decay - too many neutrons
    • Alpha Decay - "heavy" nuclei
    • Electron Capture - too few neutrons
    • Spontaneous fission- very "heavy" nuclei
    • Positron Decay - too few neutrons

  • Radioisotopes spontaneously decay in order to become more stable. (They lose the particle or energy that makes them unstable.)
