  • He purified Uranium around 1895.


  • He found Uranium would produce film images in the dark.

  • He found Uranium was too “weak” to use for diagnostics and gave up his research.


  • Becquerel received 1 gram of Radium from Madam Curie and kept the vial in his shirt pocket. (Radium was expensive to produce and very valuable, approximately $10,000 per gram in 1900 dollars.)


  • He received radiation burn to his chest from this source.


  • Like Becquerel, many early workers suffered from radiation related illnesses.
