  • When a beta particle approaches an atom it imparts energy to the atom.
  • The beta particle's path is bent and it goes off to interact with other atoms until it loses sufficient energy to be "absorbed" by an atom as an electron.
  • To shed the energy from the passing Beta the atom releases the energy as an x-ray.
  • Each x-ray reflects the remaining energy of the beta.
  • The X-rays generated (no mass or charge) require lead to shield them.
  • Using low Z materials reduces Bremsstrahlung production sufficiently so no lead is required.
