A large Ir-192 source, of approximately 30 Ci, fell out of a gamma camera. The experienced radiographer working with the camera took readings with a radiation detector. Since the measurement at six feet was not "that high" according to his calculations, he decided it was safe to move closer to the source.

He eventually placed the source in his back pocket where it stayed for about 45 minutes.

Several hours after dropping the source off at the main office of his workplace,he experienced nausea and burning in his buttocks and sought medical assistance. It was estimated that he received a dose of about 20,000 rad to his gluteus maximus.
