    • The main damage to DNA is a CHAIN BREAK.

      • Single strand breaks are the result of low LET radiation (gamma/ x-rays).
      • Double strand breaks are the result of high LET radiation (alpha particles).


    • Cross linking may occur during the repair mechanism resulting in:

      • DNA crosslink to DNA which may affect protein reading.
      • DNA crosslinked to a protein.


    • DNA damage to bases which causes a break.


    • Dimerization of the chain from a chain break may also occur breaking down the ability of the chain to reproduce.
