Direct Interaction of Radiation with Tissue

back (1K)       next (1K)

Interaction of ionizing radiation occurs very rapidly, in less than 10-10 Sec.
    This interaction results in:
    • ionization in the tissue
    • excitation of the affected molecules
    • thermal heating which can degrade or denature materials
Injury to cells and tissues will always begin with chemical changes at the atomic/molecular level.
