FREE RADICALS

    Free radicals have a 10-5 sec lifetime.
    They quickly recombine as follows:
    • H• + OH • <=> H20
    • OH • + OH • <=> H2O2
    These free radicals diffuse through a cell and can cause remote damage. The hydroxide form can affect various macromolecules and cause cell damage.
    DNA and RNA as well as essential enzymes are affected by free radicals. Their recombination can cause cell death, malfunction, and result in cell mutation during mitosis.
    Free radical interaction is believed to be the primary LET delivery system in living systems.
