Potential to receive a dose causing ARS

  • ARS is only seen in accidents (Chernobyl) or situations where high levels of exposure are intentionally delivered (Atomic bomb, radiation therapy).
  • Most University of Washington medical staff receive less than 200 mrem (0.2 rem) per year.
  • Most University of Washington research staff receive less than 2 mrem (0.002 rem) per year.
  • Even if you received 5 rem (50 mSv) every year (the Federal limit for exposure to radiation) for 10 years, you would not receive enough exposure to show symptoms of ARS as you would if 50 rem were received in a one hour period.
  • If you have questions about your radiation exposure you should contact the University of Washington Radiation Safety Office for information.
