  • Crypt cells are the cells that reproduce to form villi which line the GI tract and are responsible for absorbing nutrients.
  • Remember that faster growing cells are more radiosensitive.
  • Crypt cells are killed, resulting in denuded villi.
  • Hemorrhage and holes form through the denuded areas.
  • Decreased absorption of fluids and nutrient and dehydration occurs.
  • Bacteria from the gut enter blood, causing infection.
  • The patient dies from a combination of starvation, dehydration, and sepsis.
