Cell Survival Curve

  • The mathematical equation for cell survival follows a curve similar to that for radiological decay.

    • Multi-target - Single hit model or Multi-hit, Single target Model:
      • Target can be hit at least once without cell death.
      • There is a quasi-threshold dose (Dq) below which effect is diminished.
      • These models only occur in complex biological systems.
      • Dq produces sub-lethal damage.
      • Since different structures may control the same function(redundancy) lethal damage can be avoided.

The number of hits per cell also known as the extrapolation number (n) = # of targets/cell or # or hits/target in a cell to inactivate that cell. For mammalian cells this target number, n = 2 - 10.
