Mean Lethal Dose in Cells

    Most studies of mammals are carried out using cell cultures where the cultures are irradiated in vitro. This data is used to predict various outcomes and risks associated with exposure to ionizing radiation.

    • D37 dose is the mean lethal dose used for cell survival studies.
    • This assumes a 37% survival of the cells.

    • Low D37 = radiosensitive
      High D37 = radio resistant

      Mammalian Cells:

      D37 = 100 rads (LOW LET radiation)
      D37 = 10 rads (HIGH LET radiation)
