Fetal Central Nervous System (CNS) Effects

  • During the first eight to twenty-five weeks post-conception the CNS is particularly sensitive to radiation.
  • Fetal doses in excess of 100 mSv (10 rem) can result in some reduction of IQ (intelligence quotient).
  • Fetal doses in the range of 1000 mSv (100 rem) can result in severe mental retardation and microcephaly, particularly during the first trimester and, to a lesser extent, during the second trimester.
  • The universally accepted maximum cumulative fetal dose during pregnancy is 5 rem. Anything above this exposure will normally be evaluated by a physician to determine recommendations for the pregnancy to the pregnant individual.
