If you build a beta shield to reduce the dose rate from a high energy beta radiation source,
what should you do before using that shield?
Submit a detailed shielding calculation to the Radiation Safety Office six months
in advance of building the shield.
Check to see if the shield is certified as nuclear-shielding grade.
With the source and shielding in place, use an appropriate survey instrument to
make sure that the shielding is adequate.
Use a high Z material. The denser the better to stop the penetrating beta radiation.
