Radiation is used to treat many types of cancer. The following are the three
basic methods of treating cancer using radiation:
- External Beam
- Implant (brachytherapy)
External Beam Therapy (Radiation Oncology)
Linear accelerators are used to focus a beam of radiation on a cancer site.
This type of treatment is done on an outpatient basis. Usually patients go to
the Radiation Oncology department for a daily treatments over a 30 day period.
Safety concern: These patients do not become radioactive in any way
and present no radiological hazard to anyone around them.
