EH&S Biosafety Training is required for all Principal Investigators (PIs) if their research includes the use of recombinant DNA and/or biohazardous agents. This training is also required every 3 years for all students, fellows, laboratory managers, research staff, and other staff with potential for exposure to all recombinant DNA and other biohazardous agents at the UW. Training is required prior to initiation of work with biohazards and every three years thereafter. Classes completed after May 10, 2010 meet this requirement. This is a general biosafety training course, which covers roles and responsibilities when conducting research with recombinant DNA and other biohazardous agents. The course also covers the review and approval process for biohazardous agents at the University of Washington and the requirements governing their use (e.g. facilities, equipment, practices).

This class is required for all UW faculty, staff and students who work in laboratories
where hazardous chemicals are present. The class outlines chemical hazards and personal
protection, chemical storage, MSDSs, hazardous waste disposal, and chemical spill
prevention and response in laboratories. It also highlights related EH&S resources.
This class partially fulfills federal and state chemical safety and hazardous waste
training requirements and must be supplemented with laboratory-specific training on
chemical hazards and waste management. Initial training is required.
Regularly scheduled, in-person training has been discontinued, but can be scheduled
for groups if there are enough students. The online and the instructor-led classes
fulfill the same regulatory requirements.
Supervisors, PIs, and others responsible for laboratory safety are also required to
attend the Laboratory Safety Standard Compliance training and individuals who ship hazardous
materials (e.g. hazardous chemicals, compressed gasses, lithium batteries, infectious
substances) are required to take Shipping Hazardous Materials.
