Unknown Waste

Unknown chemicals cause a big problem. Until they are characterized, we cannot pick them up for disposal of hazardous waste, nor may they be disposed of as non-hazardous waste.

EH&S will characterize unknown waste at your expense. The cost is at least $80 per unknown and may take several weeks to schedule and complete. After successful characterization, EH&S will pick up your waste if it is hazardous.

To request an unknown characterization, please provide the following information on a Non-Routine Chemical Collection Request Form:

  • Budget name and number
  • Contact information
  • Number of containers
  • Container size and type
  • Color of waste
  • Physical state of waste (solid, etc)

Avoid unknown chemicals and their related expenses by labeling bottles, checking chemical inventories, and properly disposing of expired and unwanted chemicals.
