Examples of Confined Spaces at UW

The University has hundreds of confined spaces located throughout campus. Here are some examples:

  • Tanks: fuel, chemical, drainage, collection
  • Sewers or storm drains
  • Vaults: electrical, service, above or below ground
  • Trenches or other open excavations
  • Vessels: boilers, pressure chambers, engineered structures
  • Storage bins for liquid or solids
  • Water collection systems: cisterns, pools ponds, wells
  • Hoppers: dust collection systems
  • Building spaces: air plenums, crawl spaces, air ducts, pipe chases
