Asbestos Restricted Area List

Procedure for access: Notify Environmental Health and Safety (206-543-7262) of the need to enter the area. Identify the activity to occur. You will be advised of the cautionary measures required, which may include air monitoring, preparation of the area, protective clothing, and special precautions during work. Facilities Services Employees should call the Regulated Material Management Office (5-3357). PLEASE NOTE: If a material is not on this list, do not assume it does not contain asbestos. Contact your supervisor for sampling information.

Atmospheric Sciences-Geophysics Building Ceiling tiles and above Original ceiling tiles have been sampled and found to contain asbestos. On floors 1-5, and 7, 6 out of 6 original ceiling tiles sampled were found to contain 1-2% chrysotile and 1% amosite, 6 out of 6 replacement ceiling tiles were sampled and no asbestos was detected. Floor 6 was recently remodeled, and ceiling tiles were replaced.
Bagley Hall Pipe chases Deteriorated asbestos insulation in pipes. Pipe chases that are not restricted are marked with "non-restricted" signs.
Bagley Hall Dirt crawl space Dirt crawl space with some soil samples showing presence of asbestos. Hazardous materials may be present beneath the soil sealant membrane. Some areas of the membrane have been found to have damage. Entry is permitted only by following procedures coordinated and approved by EH&S.
Edmundson Pavilion Pool Dirt crawl space entered from pool mechanical room Asbestos insulation/debris in dirt. Temporary clean up completed January 1991. Area is still restricted.
Facilities Services Administration Building (Physical Plant Office Building) Crawl space Dirt crawl space contaminated with asbestos debris. Sample of debris from crawl space contained 25-50% amosite.
Fisheries Center (Portage Bay Building) Pipe Chases throughout building Damaged asbestos pipe insulation and debris in pipe chases Access is restricted until insulation and debris is cleaned, encapsulated, &/or abated. Restricted access stickers are posted on access panels.
Gowen Hall 300A (inside custodial closet) Damaged asbestos insulation in crawlspace. Access to area is posted as restricted.
Haggett Hall Garage Ceiling space above parking garage N-9 Asbestos pipe insulation debris and damaged hard pipe insulation exist in this space. For personnel access, areas around access hatches should be cleaned if debris is present. Access hatch areas which are cleaned are posted with a sign stating so.
Henderson Hall (APL) Northwest section of roof Damaged asbestos and lead containing paint Opening to northwest section of roof is boarded off and a restricted access sticker is posted.

MacKenzie Hall Entire Building 9x9 Ceiling tiles
Magnuson Health Sciences Center B wing - attic space above old auditorium ceiling (4th floor) Deteriorated asbestos tape and mud on exterior insulation of abandoned ductwork. Debris in space contains asbestos.
Magnuson Health Sciences Center B wing - pipe chases Damaged pipe insulation throughout. Acess restricted until debris is cleaned and insulation is encapsulated and/or abated. Access panels/doors are posted with restricted access stickers.
Magnuson Health Sciences Center BB Wing - areas above suspended ceilings for floors 9-16 Structural steel with spray-on insulation. Debris may be on top surface of ceiling tiles. All areas where spray-on insulation is present and which have suspended ceilings. The exceptions to this are: Rooms 1344 and 1338, and part of the adjacent corridor, which were abated, and room 919B where the spray-on is non-ACM. CAUTION: Even after the tiles have been cleaned, work done in the ceiling space may cause more delamination. Precautions must be taken to avoid such delamination. Projects involving more than visual observation above the ceiling for design or engineering purposes, or air handling adjustments by the Control Crew must be designed by an AHERA accredited Project Designer, reviewed by the UW Competent Person, and accepted by UW EH&S.
Magnuson Health Sciences Center BB wing - pipe chases floors 9-16 Asbestos-containing (20% chrysotile) spray-on insulation inside pipe chases. These chases were cleaned during an abatement project in August 1991. Testing since that cleaning has found additional delaminated material. Contact EH&S for access requirements.
Magnuson Health Sciences Center H wing - pipe chases (old wing) Loose asbestos debris in some chases. Clean up of a chase must be done before each entry. Plastic barriers now in place. Old H-Wing is scheduled for future renovation.
Magnuson Health Sciences Center T wing - areas above suspended ceilings Structural steel with spray-on insulation. Debris may be on top surface of ceiling tiles. All areas where spray-on insulation is present and which have suspended ceilings, excluding corridor T-102J where it was removed in 10/92.
