How to Avoid and Correct |
| 1. Electrical: Misuse of extension cords, electrical panels and boxes without covers, etc.
|
- Plug high amperage equipment directly into receptacles.
- Use surge suppressor with circuit breakers for low amperage equipment.
- Report missing electrical panel covers and J-box covers to Facilities by calling 206-685-1411.
- Limit use of extension cords to temporary uses (that is, one shift or one day max)

| 2. Unapproved Storage

- Discontinue the placing of items in the Exit corridors or stairs: surplus items should not be stored in Exit-ways. For more information on surplus pick-up, see UW Surplus Property's Web site at www.uwsurplus.com (leaves EH&S Web site), or call 206-685-1573.

3. Repair Exit Lights

|
- Exit lights should have both lamps lit. If burned out, anyone can place a work order by calling Facilities Services at 206-685-1411 to have it replaced.
|
4. Repair Exit Door Hardware

|
- Make sure doors close to a latching position. If it does not, call Facilities Services at 206-685-1411 for repairs.

| 5. Label Chemicals

|
- Be sure all chemicals are properly identified by the chemical's name and appropriate hazard warnings (if written by hand, it must be legible).
|
6. Inspect Fire Extinguisher

|
- Medical Center fire extinguishers require monthly inspections. Campus extinguishers require yearly inspections. All inspections are done by a certified inspection engineer.
- If a fire extinguisher has low pressure, or is missing, report it to Physical Plant (Facilities Services) at 206-685-1411.

7. Seal Penetrations/ Loose or Missing Ceiling Tiles

- Call Physical Plant (Facilities Services) at
206-685-1411, to replace missing or broken ceiling tiles. This enables sprinkler heads and smoke detectors to work properly.

- Labs create their own hygiene plan to follow. For more information, see the online version of the

9. Compressed Gas Cylinders
|
- Keep gas cylinders properly secured with chains or straps.
|
| 10. Departmental Health and Safety Plans

|
- All employees must be familiar with the department's Health and Safety Plan and the Emergency Evacuation and Operations Plan for their building. Templates for writing the plans are on the EH&S Web site at:
