Evacuation Exemptions

Evacuation is the standard response to a fire or fire alarm system activation for all occupancies at the University of Washington except for inpatient areas of the University Medical Center. Evacuation exemptions outside of the medical center may be approved on a case by case basis. A site-specific plan must be developed and staff oriented on the plan. The approved plan must be posted. All exemptions are subject to re-evaluation every three years.

Evacuation exemption is generally limited to personnel performing or supporting surgical procedures. The purpose is to reduce the possibility of compromising a patient or animal's health by stopping, or delaying completion of a surgical or other significant medical procedure. Exemptions must be approved in writing by Environmental Health and Safety. Examples include:

  • Animal Surgery
  • Dental Surgery

To request an exemption please complete the Evacuation Exemption Request form (PDF) and submit online for approval by Environmental Health and Safety Department, or print and mail the completed form to Darren Branum, Box 354400. For questions please call Darren Branum at (206) 616-5519.

Do not request evacuation exemption for persons with disabilities. For information and procedures for persons with disabilities, please review our Evacuation for Persons with Disabilities page.
