Disposal of Pharmaceuticals

Never throw away or flush expired and unused pharmaceuticals.

You must return expired or unused DEA Schedule II-V drugs to Drug Services at the UWMC Pharmacy. More information and forms are at Drug Services under Controlled Substance Information and Forms. You are required to log in with your UW NetID to access these files. If you have other questions on the drug return policy, contact Drug Services at 206.598.6058 or drugsvcs@u.washington.edu.

All other pharmaceuticals must be disposed of as hazardous waste. For information on hazardous waste collection at the UW, please see the hazardous chemical waste webpage.

The state of Washington has classified all expired and unwanted pharmaceuticals, including "over the counter" drugs, as Dangerous Waste. For more general information about how and why we manage pharmaceuticals as hazardous waste, go to the Washington State Department of Ecology's pharmaceuticals website.
