Chemical Waste

Updated April 12, 2024

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is responsible for the collection of hazardous chemical waste for the University, including all campuses and off-site locations.

There is no charge for hazardous chemical waste collection, except for unknown chemicals and unstable peroxide forming chemicals

Chemical waste requirements

Chemical waste generators are required to:

  1. Choose appropriate containers;
  2. Store and manage containers safely;
  3. Place a UW hazardous waste label on each container; and
  4. Request a chemical waste collection from EH&S.

Request a chemical waste collection

Set up a routine chemical waste collection

If you generate waste on a regular basis, consider requesting a routine (recurring) waste collection.

  • Complete a Request New Chemical Waste Routine form.
  • Your chemical waste will be assigned a routine number that will be linked to the waste composition and the pickup location.

If you have questions about whether a waste qualifies for routine collection, contact the EH&S Environmental Programs office.

Manage chemical waste safely

University personnel who generate hazardous chemical waste at the University (including all campuses and off-site locations) are required to follow chemical waste management practices.

EH&S recommends hazardous chemical waste generators use the Hazardous Waste Checklist as a self-audit tool to verify compliance with waste accumulation rules and prepare for periodic hazardous waste inspections by the Washington State Department of Ecology.

Refer to the UW Laboratory Safety Manual for additional information.

Emergency response and reporting

Call 9-1-1 in an emergency. Follow the EH&S exposure response procedures if potentially exposed to hazardous materials.

Visit the Hazardous Material Spills page for information on responding to a spill or release of hazardous materials.

UW personnel are required to submit an incident report for any work-related event that results in an injury, illness, exposure, fire, or near-miss event. Visit the Incident Reporting page for more information.
