EH&S handles the recycling of materials that would otherwise have to be disposed of as hazardous waste. See the links below for all the common (and sometimes uncommon) items we recycle.
| Batteries |
We recycle all types and sizes of batteries. |
| Chemical Exchange |
Accessible via MyChem. Obtain free chemicals or advertise your unwanted chemicals in good condition. It's easy, but some restrictions apply. |
| Computer Monitors and TVs |
These contain several pounds of lead and must be recycled, working or not, through Surplus Properties. |
| Elemental Mercury |
Elemental mercury in thermometers, older equipment, and more. Free alcohol thermometer with exchange of your mercury thermometer! |
| Fluorescent Lamps |
Fluorescent lamps and high pressure sodium halide lamps contain small amounts of mercury that is recycled. |
| Metal |
UW Recycling recycles most scrap metal, but we recycle precious metals, commodity metals, and gas cylinders that can't be reused, as well as other metal containers that contain or did contain hazardous material. |
| Oil and Oil Filters (Used) |
Motor oil, synthetic oils, vacuum pump oil, and more. |
| Shipping Drums (Used) |
We collect your used and cleaned metal and plastic drums. They aren't hazardous themselves, but we reuse them to ship out hazardous waste, and we save the UW up to $10,000 a year doing so. |
| Silver in Film and Photographic Fixer |
Film and fixer contain silver, which is hazardous and can be recycled to make more film. |
| Xylenes |
We collect waste xylene, distill it, and resell it for much cheaper than new xylene. |
| UW Recycling |
